Government finalizes 5G rollout plan in major cities. The Federal Government has taken a major step toward bringing 5G mobile internet services to Pakistan’s biggest urban centres, finalising plans that set the stage for next-generation connectivity in the coming months. According to officials, the government is preparing for the country’s first 5G spectrum auction, expected to take place by February 2026. With the aim of launching 5G services in major cities including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad within about six months after the auction.
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, said the plan involves auctioning around 600 MHz of telecom spectrum. Significantly more than what Pakistan currently uses, which will not only support 5G but also improve existing 3G and 4G services once deployed. The government has emphasised keeping spectrum pricing competitive to encourage investment by telecom operators and has already cleared key policy recommendations through the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). These recommendations now await final cabinet approval. Following which formal consultations and negotiations with telecom companies will begin.
