Punjab Government announces Electric Buses project. The Punjab government has taken a major step to modernize public transport and boost employment by approving the purchase of 1,000 electric buses and widescale recruitment across key departments.
In its 32nd cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the provincial government outlined a broad policy agenda that also includes agricultural reforms, educational improvements, and public welfare initiatives. One of the standout decisions was to expand the electric bus network by procuring 1,000 green electric buses to introduce or extend eco‑friendly public transport services at the tehsil level across Punjab.

The move is part of a larger strategy to reduce traffic congestion, lower air pollution, and offer affordable, modern transport options to commuters, especially in urban and semi‑urban areas. A cashless fare system is also set to be introduced from March 25 to facilitate smoother and more secure payment options for passengers.
Alongside the transport upgrade, the cabinet approved large‑scale job creation in provincial departments. This includes hundreds of new positions in the Crime Control Department, excise and narcotics control, and tourism police, among others — providing fresh employment opportunities for trained youth and professionals. Officials say that these decisions reflect the government’s commitment to inclusive development, with benefits reaching citizens from major cities to rural towns.
The cabinet authorized large-scale recruitment, including 216 constables in excise and narcotics departments, 1,000 posts in the Crime Control Department, and 980 tourism police positions. Officials reported the surrender of 141 dacoits in riverine areas and the recovery of abductees using surveillance technology.
